SUPERHEAT AND SUBCOOLING

Target Superheat

[(3 x Indoor Return Air Wet bulb temp)-(80)-(Outdoor dry bulb temp at condenser)]/2= Target Superheat

EXAMPLE

Indoor wet bulb = 60, Outdoor dry bulb is 90

[(3 x 60)-(80)-(90)]/2

[(180-80-90)]/2

(10)/2=5 Target superheat is 5 F

Superheat

Suction Line Temperature – Suction Saturation temperature = Superheat

Suction saturation temperature is the temperature of a refrigerant at the corresponding pressure. That is what the temperature scales on an analog gauge set indicate.

EXAMPLE

Suction line temperature is 70, Suction saturation temperature is 50

70 – 50 = 20 F Superheat

Subcooling

Liquid line saturation temperature – Liquid line temperature = Subcooling

Liquid saturation temperature is the temperature of a refrigerant at the corresponding pressure. That is what the temperature scales on an analog gauge set indicate.

EXAMPLE

Liquid line temperature is 85, Liquid line saturation temperature  is94

94 – 85 = 9 F Subcooling
